Ten months after they tied the knot, a 35-year-old woman has filed a cheating case against her charlatan husband for lying to her prior to their marriage that he was a lawyer. The accused had furnished false information about his professional credentials and monthly earnings on the matrimonial site through which they had met in December last year.

The complainant, Padmasingh Amit Chauhan, a resident of James Court society in Vimannagar, lodged an FIR on Wednesday against Amitsingh Chauhan, brother-in-law Vishal Chauhan and another relative Lalbahadursingh -- all residents of Netajinagar in Gujarat -- under sections 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 417 (forgery) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to the complaint, Vishal sought information about her from the matrimonial site in October 2012. He then came to Padmasingh’s house and met her parents and brother. He proposed Amit’s name for marriage. Vishal claimed that Amit had BSc and LLB degrees and earned about Rs 50,000 per month from his share brokerage business and supervision of a cycle shop.

“Vishal invited our family to their native place in Ahmedabad during Diwali. Accordingly, my father and brother went there, but due to the Diwali festival, the market and all shops were shut. The Chauhans showed us a shop with its shutters down, claiming it to be theirs. We had no other option to verify their claims then. After Diwali, they came to our house in Pune and asked us to fix the date of the wedding as early as possible. As per their wish, I got engaged to Amit on December 9, 2012 and the wedding ceremony took place on February 1, 2013,” Padmasingh has stated in her statement.

“After moving to Ahmedabad with Amit, I gradually got to know that he didn’t work at the stock market and earns only Rs 20,000 per month. Also, he had posted false information on the matrimonial site and was not a graduate too. Amit had also taken Rs 2 lakh in cash and 30 grams gold ornaments as dowry at the time of marriage,” Padmasingh said.

Police Inspector Dilip Naukudkar said, “For the last three days, we were busy in police bandobast duty. We have not yet arrested Amit Chauhan and the other accused.” u00a0
