To encourage NGOs in the city to work closely with the forest department towards the conservation of forests and wildlife, the government body is aiming to break the ice with Wildlife Week

Wildlife Week to bridge the gap between NGOs and forest department

In what brings good news for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts, the forest department and Nature Walk charitable trust have come together to make National Wildlife Week a memorable one this year. Wildlife Week will be held from October 1- 7. There is no entry fee and the event is open to all. Events will be organised at two main venues — the Indradhanushya Centre and Bal Gandharva Art Gallery.

While many NGOs and the forest department are striving to achieve the same goal — conservation of forests and wildlife — there is no unity between the two. Attempting to bring the environmental bodies under one roof, the forest department is aiming to bridge the gap with this year’s Wildlife Week.

Anuj Khare, current wildlife warden for Pune district said, “The main aim of the event is to bring together government bodies and NGOs in the city to work together for the conservation of forest areas in the state. The forest department is not aware of all the NGOs working for this cause and this platform will help bring both on the same wavelength and to work with each other more efficiently.”

Shalik Jogwe, a wildlife enthusiast from Chandrapur, who has been working in the Tadoba region, one of the finest tiger reserves in Maharashtra, for the past than 10 years, will be speaking at the event. He will be narrating his experiences and presenting a slide show today at the Indradhanushya Centre from 6.00 to 8 pm. Jogwe said, “It is my passion to work in Tadoba. I will be sharing my forest work experiences and what can be done to preserve it..”

Man Eating Tigers and Rajhans - Swans of India by renowned wildlife filmmakers will also be screened at the Indradhanushya Centre on October 2 from 6:30-8 pm.

A wildlife photography exhibition by Vikram Potdar will be held at Balgandharva Art Gallery on October 7 from 10 am to 8pm.
