Two students from a Pune-based school drowned at the popular Kashid beach in Murud, Raigad district, on Wednesday afternoon. The duo had visited the beach as part of a school picnic.

The victims have been identified as Rakesh Jahangid (14) and Faizan Shaikh (18).
A case of accidental death has been registered with Murud police station. According to Murud police, “Around 58 school children from New Dawn School in Kondhwa Khurd, along with their teachers, had come in a luxury bus from Pune to Kashid beach around 11 am for a pre-Diwali vacation picnic organised by the school. The children were mostly from class seven and eight.”
The police added, “The duo had ventured into the sea with other students. However, they could not judge the depth of the water near the shore and started drowning. While one student was saved, the other two were not so lucky. One of the teachers also tried to saved them, but to no avail. We had to use speed boats to fish out the bodies.”
