Tsundue, a resident of Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh, is a well known activist associated with Friends of Tibet (India) and has been held several times earlier for staging protests against Chinese occupation of Tibet, especially when Chinese leaders visit India.

To stage a similar protest against Chinese president Xi Jinping, who was scheduled to visit Sabarmati Ashram today afternoon, Tsundue claimed to have entered Sabarmati Ashram yesterday as a visitor and hid himself inside, the police said.
"Today morning, we found him inside the Ashram and detained him. He identified himself as Tenzin Tsundue, who is known for doing such activities. He might have planned to protest against the Chinese president, but we detained him before he could do that. He will be released after Jinping leaves the city," a senior crime branch official said.
