India on Saturday reported 1,73,790 fresh Covid-19 cases while 3,617 patients succumbed to the Coronavirus in the last 24 hours, the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry said. This is the third time since April 13 that India has recorded less than two lakh cases. The fatalities have also remained below 4,000 for three consecutive days.

Above 90 per cent recovery
India’s Covid-19 recovery rate has gone up to 90.80 per cent and the active caseload slid down to 22,28,724—a positive sign amid the second wave. India’s daily recoveries continued to outnumber the daily new cases for the 16th consecutive day on Friday and 2,84,601 recoveries were registered in the last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry’s latest data revealed on Saturday.
Positive signs in Delhi
Delhi has reported around 900 Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the lowest single-day spike since March, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced on Saturday. On March 23, Delhi had registered 1,100 cases. The latest figure came a day after the Delhi government announced the gradual unlocking of the National Capital, which has been under a strict lockdown since April 19. On Friday, the city reported 1,141 new infections and the daily positivity rate was below 2 per cent. Delhi’s daily cases and positivity rate have declined in the last three weeks.
Highest one-day spike in AP
Arunachal Pradesh recorded the highest single-day spike of 497 Covid-19 cases, pushing the tally in the northeastern state to 26,317, a senior health department official said on Saturday. Earlier, the state recorded the highest single-day spike of 480 cases on May 25. The Covid-19 death toll in the state rose to 111 after two more persons with comorbidities succumbed to the infection in the past two days, State Surveillance Officer (SSO) Dr Lobsang Jampa said.
Sewage surveillance to track Covid
Hit hard by Covid-19’s second wave, Karnataka is introducing a sewage surveillance system across 45 wards of the 198 wards on pilot basis to track the deadly mutant virus at an early stage, even among asymptomatic individuals. “We are happy to be the first in India to launch this platform,” Additional Chief Secretary, Urban Development and BBMP administrator, Rakesh Singh tweeted.
