Happy birthday Akash and Isha

Friday night saw Nita and Mukesh Ambani host a very special evening at their noted home on Altamount Road to celebrate the 24th birthday of their elder son and daughter - twins Akash and Isha Ambani.

The stunningly organised dinner was hosted on the helipad of Antilia, their multi-storey apartment block and the guest list for the sit down meal included close family, friends and other celebrities from the cricket and film circuits. The meal is said to have been catered by Delhi’s Indian Accent restaurant, which is a family favourite.

And post dinner the younger guests are said to have moved to another floor to continue the celebrations. Akash and Isha both graduated from Ivy League schools Brown and Yale respectively, before joining their father at Reliance and are personally supervising the highly anticipated Reliance Jio project, which is said to launch in the upcoming months.

And it was all yellow
It’s tough to keep up with the activities of the indefatigable BJP spokesperson Shaina NC. But when she has an Amitabh Bachchan by her side, in a show-stopping butter cup yellow bandhi, and I love Mumbai, the NGO founded by her father Nana launches the ‘Alliance for Riding Knights’ at their Tiger Conservation Motorbike Rally, it sure is a clutter buster.

“Mr Bachchan and Sudhir Mungantiwar, Minister of Finance & Planning, Forests, Government of Maharashtra flagged off the rally,” said Shaina. “It was a huge success.”

Funny bones on Sunday
A substantial serving of Mumbai’s top doctors were present at Mumbai’s Rooftop Rendezvous yesterday for the release of leading city orthopedic surgeon Dr Arun Mullaji’s book by BJP Minister Piyush Goel.

According to a guest, the afternoon was witness to the aristocracy of city doctors like the Udwadias (both brothers Tempton and Farokh), the Soonawallas (urologist Dr Phiroze) and Dr Nilesh Shah of NM Centre. But if you think a gathering of men and women in charge of Mumbai’s hearts and bones would be a somber one – think again.

The air was filled with guffaws and chuckles as the afternoon’s compere, funny man Kunal Vijayakar conducted the event with characteristic humour. Best of all there were a series of cartoons across the venue on the lighter side of medicine, done by Mullaji’s old batch mate from Jai Hind and KEM fellow doctor and leading cartoonist, Dr Hemant Morparia.

Fashionistas drop anchor
Blame it on our sense of timing (either way too early for Mumbai’s ‘chalta hai’ standards or too late, a result of its chaotic traffic), but we never saw Sonam Kapoor in Rahul Mishra at the opening of the Ashiesh Shah designed Le Mill’s Colaba store on Saturday.

Roohi Jaikishen

Who we did see when we arrived at, was fashionista Roohi Jaikishan, who’d taken the dress code of ‘neckerchief and nautical striptease’ no doubt inspired by the adjoining Yacht Club to another level. What did Jaikishan, a regular at fashion weeks across Europe, think of the newly located store?

“(It’s an) achingly chic collection of Indian & western designers. Curated with a keen eye for fashion,” she said, adding, “The choice of furniture, lighting & stationery is selective and eclectic, making it the coolest store in town.”

RIP Shamshad Hussain
Our deep condolences to the family of the late great MF Husain, who lost their sibling Shamshad over the weekend.

The Delhi-based artist, the second eldest son of Husain, was universally known as one of the most sensitive and generous souls and his passing has saddened the art community, many of whom like Dadiba Pundole were seen at the funeral at Bader baug at Grant Road where prayers were held.

Artists like Yusuf Arakkal, a friend of the late artist, were said to be devastated by the news and the family is said to be considering a prayer meet in the following days where artists and admirers from all over the country can pay their respects.

A sumptuous repast
Apparently every time Zubin Mehta conducts in India he has one request. He wants members of his orchestra to experience a traditional Parsi feast at the Colaba Agiary and this year was no exception.

Friday evening saw the best and brightest of Mumbai gather to break bread (or rotli and sariya) with the maestro, his wife the former actress Nancy Kovack, and members of the Australian World Orchestra (AWO) gather for a sumptuous repast of saas-ni macchi, sali margi and country mutton amongst other Parsi specialties.

Seated next to an Australia born Europe-based violinist with the AWO, we were delighted to see that he was enjoying the meal as much as we were. The dinner had been hosted by Mehta’s oldest friend, his childhood buddy from Mumbai, the internationally renowned scientist and humanist, Padma Bhushan Dr Yusuf K Hamied and his wife Farida, who were seen graciously greeting guests and making sure they had second rounds.

We spotted Dr and Mrs Farokh Udwadia, publisher of Gladrags and wife of Nusli, Maureen Wadia, culture maven and sister of Hamied, Sophie Ahmed and the Lithuanian ambassador to India, Laimonas Talat-Kelpša amongst many others; And of course the presence of Tanaz Godiwalla the undisputed high priestess of Parsi catering gave the evening its authentic flavour.
