In a renewed crackdown on narcotics smuggling, police apprehended five passengers travelling from Dharmanagar to Silchar on an interstate bus, seizing a significant quantity of cannabis on Tuesday evening.

The bus was intercepted and searched by police led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Samaresh Das near the Churaibari police station at the Tripura border.

Das informed ANI, "The search operation revealed multiple small packets of cannabis found with five passengers hailing from Bihar. The confiscated cannabis, weighing a total of seven kilograms, is estimated to have a black market value of approximately one lakh rupees.

Among the arrested individuals is a woman identified as Shivani Rani (24). The other four male passengers are Bhullu Singh (28), son of Deben Singh; Amar Nath (35), son of Durga Pashoya; Satyaranjan Goin (43), son of Ishwar Shubhankar Goin; and Bhullu Kumar (29), son of Nibora Rai. All the detainees are residents of Vaishali district in Bihar.

The police have registered a case against the five under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The woman detainee, Shivani Rani, was transferred to Dharmanagar Women's Police Station on Tuesday night, while the four male detainees are scheduled to be presented in court on Wednesday, Das confirmed.
