A beach trip for two families from the city to Dapoli in the Konkan region turned tragic after four persons, including an eight-year-old child, drowned in the sea, while two are reported to be missing.

Curious: A crowd gathered at the beach as the news spread

The incident took place at Anjarle beach at noon yesterday. Three of the deceased and one of the missing people are from the same family. Dapoli police officials, with the help of local residents, managed to rescue two others from the group who were washed away by the waves.

Both the families are residents of Dattawadi and the group of 20 had set out for the Konkan region on Saturday.
Police said the Dangi and Oza family members entered the water, along with their four children, at Anjarle beach around 12.30 pm on Sunday. Although the beach is considered safe for swimming, the children are believed to have ventured into the deep sea and started drowning. Alerted by their screams, the parents and relatives rushed to rescue them, but, except two, all others drowned.

Till 4.30 pm, police managed to fish out the bodies of Sangita Santosh Oza (35), Pavan Purushottam Dangi (8), Shruti Shantilal Dangi (13) and Savita Shyam Dangi (25).

“The incident occurred between 12.30 and 1 pm. Prima facie, it seems that the children entered in to the sea first, waded into the deep waters and started drowning. Their parents and relatives then rushed to their aid, but the currents pulled them in and as a result eight of them began drowning. Four are dead, two were rescued, two are missing and efforts are on to trace them,” a cop from Dapoli Police Station said.

Shyam Babulal Dangi (27), and Arpan Vinay Sharma (8) have been identified as missing. With the help of the villagers, police succeeded in rescuing Rupali Purushottam Dangi (27) and Rushi Santosh Oza (12). The two families had left the city on Saturday for a summer vacation trip to Konkan. After a one-day stay in Ratnagiri, they reached Dapoli on Sunday morning.
