Delhi Metro Rail Corporation completes longest twin tunnel in phase-IV

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the first twin tunnel breakthrough as part of its Phase-IV construction works, an official statement said. With the twin tunnels stretching approximately 3 kilometres, it is the longest built under this phase of the project, the statement read. According to the official statement, the two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), named Bhoomi and Srishti, emerged simultaneously at Pulbangash Metro Station on Wednesday, marking the completion of the twin tunnels connecting Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Janakpuri West-R K Ashram corridor, an extension of the Magenta line. "Both TBMs were successfully retrieved at Pulbangash Metro Station on Wednesday, in just over 14 months, covering a length of approximately 2,997 metres, at an average rate of 8.2 metres per tunnel per day. This is also the longest tunnelling drive (almost 3 km) in DMRC’s Phase IV works," the statement said. The event was attended by Dharmendra, Chief Secretary of Delhi, and Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC. Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, expressed pride in the accomplishment and reiterated the organization’s commitment to delivering safe and efficient transport infrastructure for the residents of Delhi. "Afcons is executing the DC-05 package that includes six underground stations, tunnelling of 14.4km including crossover, 10 cross passages, and 170m open and underground ramp. Today 3 km of twin tunnelling has been completed from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash," the company said in a statement. The twin tunnels were excavated at a depth of 14-15 meters, passing through densely populated areas such as Rana Pratap Bagh and Punjabi Basti Colony, and crossing beneath the Najafgarh drain, a structurally sensitive zone. Despite the challenges of tunnelling through submerged water conditions and navigating the under-construction Ghanta Ghar station, no damage was caused to any structures, it said in the statement. The tunnels, with an internal diameter of 5.8 metres, feature six cross passages which will connect the two for passenger safety. The civil work for this section was carried out by the contractor, M/s Afcons. The deployment of TBM Bhoomi began on June 18, 2023, and TBM Srishti followed on August 19, 2023. ‘One nation, one election’ not practical, says Congress President Kharge

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge reacted to the high-level committee report on ‘One nation, one election’ on Wednesday and said that the idea is “not practical." He also blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party government for diverting attention from real issues, reported PTI. Kharge’s remarks came after the proposal of 'One nation, one election' was approved before the Union Cabinet. At a press conference, Kharge said, "It is not practical. It will not work. When elections come, and they are not getting any issues to raise, then they divert attention from real issues." The 'One nation, one election' report was submitted to the Union Cabinet in March ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. The proposal was submitted by a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, PTI reported. The Union Cabinet approved the ‘One nation, one election’ plan on Wednesday, moving the country closer to holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The bill allowing for simultaneous polling is expected to be tabled during the next winter session of Parliament, stated media reports.  According to a news report, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said 'One nation, one election' is to be carried out in two phases, emphasising that the proposal was embraced by large number of parties.  "Over 80 per cent of the respondents supported simultaneous polls. The opposition parties may face pressure from within to support it," Vaishnaw said  While National Democratic Alliance's allies like Janata Dal (United) and Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party has supported the plan, Opposition parties such Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT) still stand opposed to the idea of simultaneous polls, claiming that it will favour the ruling party at the Centre. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O'Brien called the approval of the report as a “cheap stunt” from the Union Government, reported PTI.  “Why were the Maharashtra elections not announced along with the polls in Haryana and Jammu-Kashmir? Here’s why. The Maharashtra government announced the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme in the budget this June. The first tranche reached the bank accounts of women in August and the second tranche will reach beneficiaries in October. You cannot do three states in one go and you talk about ONOE [One nation, one poll],” he said.

BJP MP Anil Bonde booked over 'Rahul Gandhi's tongue should be singed' remarks

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha member Anil Bonde was booked by the Amravati Police in Maharashtra over his controversial 'Rahul Gandhi's tongue should be singed' remarks, an official said on Wednesday, reported the PTI. Anil Bonde was booked on the charge of intention to cause riots over his controversial remarks against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, the police said. Anil Bonde had recently kicked up a row, saying Rahul Gandhi's tongue should be singed as his remarks on reservation were "dangerous" and hurt the feelings of the 'bahujan' and majority communities, as per the PTI. The FIR against Anil Bonde followed a sit-in protest by Congress leaders, including Amravati MP Balwant Wankhede, MLA Yashomati Thakur, former Minister Sunil Deshmukh and the party workers at the office of the city police commissioner. A case was registered against Bonde at Rajapeth police station in Amravati under sections 192 (Wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riots), 351 (ii) (the act of intentionally causing another person to apprehend the use of criminal force) and 356 (Punishment for defamation) against MP Anil Bonde. "The language of chopping off the tongue is not proper, but what Rahul ji said against reservation is dangerous," Bonde said on Tuesday while reacting to remarks made by a Shiv Sena MLA against Rahul Gandhi, according to the PTI. "Hence, if anyone speaks anything absurd in a foreign country, then rather than chopping off his tongue, it should be singed. It is necessary to certainly singe the tongues of such people - be it Rahul Gandhi, Dnyanesh Maharao or Shyam Manav and people who hurt the feelings of the 'bahujan' and majority," Anil Bonde said, the news agency reported on Wednesday. Maharao, an author, is accused of making derogatory comments on Hindu deities recently, while Manav is an anti-superstition crusader. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Wednesday expressed shock over media reports of 'threat' to Congress top leader Rahul Gandhi and demanded that the Centre act swiftly to ensure his protection. In a post on X, Stalin said: "Deeply shocked by media reports of a BJP leader's threat that @RahulGandhi 'will meet the same fate as his grandmother,' and a Shinde Sena MLA's bounty for cutting his tongue, along with other intimidating threats." "My brother Rahul Gandhi's charisma and growing public support have clearly unsettled many, leading to such vile acts of intimidation. The Union government must act swiftly to ensure protection for the Leader of the Opposition and reaffirm that intimidation and violence have no place in our democracy," Stalin, also the chief of Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK, said. Fulfill our demands in four days: Manoj Jarange to govt

Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange on Wednesday said that the Maharashtra government should fulfill the demands of the Maratha community in four days, reported the PTI. Manoj Jarange also said that if the demands were not fulfilled the government shall face consequences in the coming Maharashtra assembly elections 2024, as per the PTI. Speaking at his Antarwali Sarati village in Jalna district, he said the community will not forgive the Shiv Sena-BJP-NCP government in the state if its demands were not met. "Fulfill our demands in the next four days, otherwise you will have to face serious repercussions in the elections....Marathas will not forgive you," he said, the news agency reported. Manoj Jarange had on Tuesday launched a fresh indefinite fast, sixth in a span of over a year, to press the demand of reservations for the Marathas under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. He began the stir from midnight at his native Antarwali Sarati village of Jalna district in Maharashtra. Addressing reporters before his agitation, Manoj Jarange accused the Maharashtra government of not giving reservation to the community deliberately, and said the Marathas were giving "once more chance" to Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to resolve the quota issue. He also warned the ruling parties that they will have to face the consequences in the upcoming assembly elections if the community's demands are not met. Manoj Jarange has been demanding implementation of the draft notification that recognises Kunbis as 'sage soyare' (blood relatives) of Maratha community members and granting reservation to the latter under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. He said he also wants cases registered against several members of the Maratha community during his agitation earlier to be withdrawn. "The Maratha community is important to me, but the government is not giving reservation deliberately. Moreover, they say that we are speaking a political language...Now, I will no longer make political statements, but we are giving one more chance to Deputy CM Fadnavis (to resolve the issue)," he said, as per the PTI. The leaders who support Fadnavis should talk to him. The community is watching who is going to provide reservation, the activist said. "My community doesn't want to enter politics. But if the demands are not met, don't blame me for the consequences in the upcoming assembly elections. Give reservation, and I will not make political statements. But don't blame me for what will happen in the upcoming elections if we don't get reservation," he added. The notification of 'sage soyare' should be implemented immediately, Manoj Jarange said, according to the PTI. Questioning the government's "inaction" over the draft 'sage soyare' notification, he sought implementation of gazettes from the erstwhile princely states of Hyderabad and Satara and Bombay Presidency. "These documents recognised Marathas as Kunbis," he said. (with PTI inputs)

One nation, one election: Union cabinet clears proposal

The Union cabinet on Wednesday cleared the proposal for one nation, one election after accepting the Kovind panel report on it, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, reported the PTI. The report of the high-level committee on 'one nation, one election' was placed before the Union Cabinet on Wednesday, sources told the PTI. The panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind had submitted the report in March ahead of the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. #WATCH | Union Cabinet has accepted the recommendations by the high-level committee on 'One Nation, One Election', announces Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.(Video source: PIB/ YouTube) pic.twitter.com/NnE99wNDer — ANI (@ANI) September 18, 2024 Placing the report before the Cabinet was a part of the law ministry's 110-day agenda. The panel had also proposed setting up of an 'Implementation Group' to look into the execution of the recommendations made by the committee. #WATCH | On 'One Nation, One Election', Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw says, "A large number of political parties across the political spectrum has actually supported the One Nation One Election initiative. The panel also recommended the preparation of a common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in consultation with state election authorities. At present, the ECI is responsible for the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, while the local body polls for municipalities and panchayats are managed by state election commissions. The panel recommended as many as 18 constitutional amendments, most of which will not need ratification by state Assemblies. However, these would require certain Constitution amendment Bills that would need to be passed by Parliament. Some proposed changes regarding the single electoral roll and single voter ID card would need ratification by at least half of the states. Separately, the Law Commission is also likely to come up soon with its own report on simultaneous polls, of which Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been a strong votary. Sources said that the Law Commission is likely to recommend holding simultaneous polls for all three tiers of the government -- the Lok Sabha, state Assemblies and local bodies like municipalities and panchayats -- starting with 2029 and a provision for unity government in cases like hung house. Recommendations and way forward - Implement in two phases - In first phase: Conduct Lok Sabha and Assembly elections simultaneously - In second phase: Conduct local body elections (panchayats and municipalities) within 100 days of general elections - Common electoral roll for all elections - Will initiate detailed discussions throughout the country - Constitute an implementation group (with PTI and ANI inputs)
