After the formation of the Kejriwal government, there has been a tremendous focus on education under the vision of Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The Delhi government under Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal realised that for the holistic development of a child there is a need to promote sports in the Delhi government schools. The object of promoting sports is to improve the games in Delhi by providing opportunities and facilities to the young and talented players to learn, train and improve their standard in sports and games for bringing medals in Olympic, Asian and Commonwealth Games as well as at international and national level. In a bid to develop sports persons in Delhi government schools the Kejriwal government increased focus on sports education. The Kejriwal government is the first government in India which brought sports University at Mundka. The Delhi government is also providing sportsperson with the best training, nutrition and equipment.


Focus on sports infrastructure


The Delhi government is providing an utmost focus on sports education by promoting sports and games activities in the Delhi government schools. The Delhi government is also focusing on developing playgrounds, sports complexes and swimming pools inside the schools. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and with the vision of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia the Delhi government is establishing sports facilities in urban areas. This focuses on developing playgrounds, construction of swimming pools, gymnasiums to make sports complexes effective and to provide adequate facilities to the young talented players of Delhi. The Delhi government has also given the focus on physical education training.


Construction of sports complexes

The Delhi government is working on setting up state of the art sports complexes in institutions under its jurisdiction. Along with the revamp of school infrastructure, the Arvind Kejriwal government is also working on the construction of sports complexes. In the last budget presented by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, the Delhi government kept around Rs.15,601 crore on 26% to education. Significantly Rs.7818, crores was given to develop infrastructure in the schools including sports complexes. The Delhi government identified 13 schools with the space required to install games facilities. The work is going on creating synthetic running tracks, courts for basketball and volleyball along with the grounds for cricket and football. These schools also have a state of the art swimming pools.

Delhi gets India’s first Sports University

Last year, Delhi Chief Minister Shri Arvind Kejriwal announced the Delhi governments' decision to establish Delhi Sports University that will offer degrees to sportspersons at par with degrees in other courses at the graduate, postgraduate and doctoral level. This sports university will grant you a degree in sports such as cricket, and hockey. A passionate sportsperson can now devote all of his time in playing and excelling in sports. His or her graduation, post-graduation, and doctorate degrees will be in the subjects of sports. He or she can show his or her degrees for various related posts wherever required. For instance, he or she can appear for the civil services examination because he will be considered a graduate after this degree. The Delhi Sports University (DSU) is proposed to be set up as a state university of the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi by the Government of NCT of Delhi. The University shall strive to establish a comprehensive eco-system of sports that shall include the creation of an interface of all stakeholders like the Government, the Industry, the Sports-persons, Sports-Federations etc. and creating appropriate manpower for the same. The key functional domains of the University shall include academics and research at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, creating systems and processes for professional excellence in various sports, undertaking skill development, sports recreation and community outreach and extension activities, developing an institutional mechanism for early-stage sports talent scouting and grooming and making provisions for bridge courses.

Delhi government ensures sports training, nutrition and equipment to the athletes

The Delhi government has been providing the best training through specialised coaches and trainers to the athletes or the sports enthusiasts of the Delhi government schools. The Delhi government has also realised that nutrition for the athletes is very important and that is why the Delhi government has been ensuring proper nutrition for the sports enthusiasts and athletes of the Delhi government schools. The Delhi government has also ensured proper equipment for the Sportspersons of the Delhi government schools. With the due focus in all these aspects, there has been a significant improvement in Delhi‘s sports scenario. More and more students are showing interest in the sports and they are also bringing prestigious medals for Delhi. The Delhi government also provides various incentives and awards to promote sports.
