Covid-19: India sees 1.34 lakh fresh infections, 2,887 deaths

With 1,34,154 fresh cases, India’s Covid-19 tally has climbed to 2,84,41,986, while the daily positivity rate has further dropped to 6.21 per cent, the health ministry said on Thursday morning.


The death toll due to the viral disease has climbed to 3,37,989 with 2,887 more people succumbing to it. The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 2,63,90,584, while the case fatality rate has gone up to 1.19 per cent, the data showed.

5 AI pilots died in May

Meanwhile, five senior pilots of Air India have died in May due to Covid-19, senior officials said on Thursday, adding that the carrier has started vaccinating its employees from May 15 onwards after a delay due to non-availability of vaccines.

These five senior pilots were Captain Harsh Tiwary, Captain G P S Gill, Captain Prasad Karmakar, Captain Sandeep Rana and Captain Amitesh Prasad, they said.

Air India had on May 4 said it would vaccinate all its employees against Covid-19 by the month-end, but couldn’t, citing “non-availability” of vaccines.

It started vaccination camps for employees with delay from May 15 onwards, Air India officials said on Thursday. It is not clear by when Air India would be able to complete the first dose of vaccination of all its employees.  IndiGo has given first dose to around 20,000 employees out of total 35,000 eligible employees that work for the carrier and its ground handling subsidiary Agile.

‘Distribute ration cards’

The Centre has issued an advisory to all states and UTs to identify and issue ration cards to the most vulnerable and economically weaker sections of society to ensure their coverage under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The Centre’s directive comes amid various reports that the poorest of the poor are in dire need of food grains but they are unable to procure ration card.

Food Secretary Sudhanshu Pandey said states and UTs have scope to add coverage of 1.97 crore under the NFSA. As many as 14 states have completed 100 per cent coverage quota. 

Michel kin seek UK govt help

The family of Christian Michel, based in the UK and France, on Thursday expressed concern for his well-being amid the ongoing pandemic in India and urged the British government to intervene on behalf of the VVIP chopper scam accused being held in Tihar Jail in New Delhi.

Alaric and Alois, the sons of the British middleman who was extradited to India from the UAE over a controversial helicopter deal, said they were increasingly concerned for their father’s well-being amid the pandemic and his medical condition involving kidney stones.

“It has been extremely hard on us, especially our 17-year-old sister,” Alaric, 26, said during an online press conference in London.

SII wants to produce Sputnik V

The Serum Institute of India (SII) has applied to the Drug Controller General of India seeking permission to manufacture Sputnik V, the Russian Covid-19 vaccine for examination, test and analysis at its licensed Hadapsar facility in Pune, official sources said on Thursday. Once these approvals are received, the SII plans to seek restricted emergency use permission for the vaccine in India. Sputnik V is currently being manufactured by Dr Reddy’s Laboratories in India. The SII has told the government that it will be able to manufacture and supply 10 crore Covishield doses in June.

HC issues summons to Ramdev

The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued summons to Ramdev on a plea accusing him of making statements against allopathic medicines and claiming Patanjali’s Coronil kit is a Covid-19 cure. The HC orally asked Ramdev’s counsel to tell him not to make any provocative statements. To the petitioners, it said, “You people [doctors] should be spending time to find cure for the pandemic instead of wasting the court’s time.”
