In Bihar's Rohtas district, an ex-army man was fatally shot by armed assailants which subsequently led to the lynching of the assailants at the hands of the locals, stated a report in PTI.

The deceased army veteran was identified as Bijendra Singh (55) who was shot by armed assailants identified as Mithilesh Kumar (23) and Aditya Kumar (25), while a third alleged assailant, Ajeet Kumar, sustained severe injuries and is receiving treatment at a government hospital,
According to the report, the Superintendent of Police, Vineet Kumar, stated that the incident occurred near Kalyani village around 9:45 am on Wednesday when three armed assailants on bikes were escaping after allegedly shooting Bijendra Singh, a retired army man and former mukhiya contestant. Local residents pursued the assailants and engaged in the assault. During the confrontation, one villager, Ankit Kumar, was shot and injured by one of the assailants, he added.
He was quoted in the PTI report as saying, "The incident took place near Kalyani village at around 9.45 am on Wednesday, when three bike-borne armed assailants were fleeing after allegedly gunning down a retired army man and former Mukhiya (village chief) contestant Bijendra Singh. The local residents chased the three assailants and assaulted them. A villager, Ankit Kumar was shot at and injured by one of the assailants when they were caught by the villagers. Immediately after getting the information, police reached the spot."
Bijendra Singh died on the spot, while the two assailants succumbed to injuries at the nearest hospital. The third assailant is currently undergoing treatment at the government hospital.
The motive behind the ex-army man's killing remains unclear. The police have initiated a special team to investigate Bijendra Singh's murder and the subsequent mob lynching of the assailants.
"The reason behind the killing of an ex-army man is yet to be ascertained. A special team has been set up to solve the mystery behind the murder of Bijendra Singh and the subsequent mob lynching that claimed the lives of two persons", the SP was further quoted as saying.
