A man tried to immolate himself near the new Parliament building on Wednesday afternoon, an official of the Delhi Fire Service (DFS) said. A call regarding the incident near the Railway Bhawan opposite the Parliament building was received at around 3.35 pm and a fire tender was pressed into service, the official said. The security personnel deployed near Parliament rushed the man to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, he said. "He set himself on fire at the roundabout near Rail Bhawan. The local police and railway police along with some people immediately extinguished the fire and the person was sent to the hospital," an official statement said. According to initial investigations, he took the extreme step due to a dispute with some individuals back home in Bagpat, it said. Police said Jitendra arrived in Delhi on a train on Wednesday morning. His half-burnt backpack and some other belongings were seized from the spot. A police officer said the man's family members have been contacted and further investigations were on. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Maharashtra local body elections expected in March-April 2025, says Bawankule

Maharashtra minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Wednesday said the pending elections to local bodies in the state will be held in March-April 2025 if the Supreme Court (SC) gives its decision on the OBC reservation in the first week of January, reported news agency PTI. This announcement was made during a press conference in Nagpur. Bawankule emphasised that the State Election Commission would oversee the elections, with the state government pledging full support for the process. He also said a hearing on the quota for the Other Backward Classes (OBC) is listed in the apex court in the first week of January, stated PTI. "The State Election Commission will conduct the polls and the state government will provide all the support," the Revenue Minister said. The elections in the state have been delayed as the five-year terms of many municipal corporations, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, expired in 2022.  A significant ruling by the Supreme Court in December 2021 stated that OBC reservations in local bodies could not be enforced unless the government complied with specific criteria, known as the triple test laid down in the apex court's 2010 order. The OBC seats will be re-notified as general category seats until the triple test criteria is fulfilled, the court had ruled. The triple test required the state government to set up a dedicated commission to gather data on the backwardness of OBCs in every local body, to specify the proportion of reservation in each local body in light of commission's recommendations, and ensure that such reservation does not exceed 50 per cent of the total seats reserved for SC/ST/OBC together, reported PTI. In addition to the election updates, Bawankule addressed concerns regarding the alleged unauthorised takeover of properties owned by private charitable trusts and educational institutions by the Waqf Board in Maharashtra.  He assured that "Once the Waqf (Amendment) Bill is cleared by Parliament, it will be implemented in Maharashtra. If there are any wrongdoings, they will be rectified," stated PTI. Moreover, Bawankule highlighted the progress of the Survey of Villages Abadi and Mapping with Improvised Technology in Village Areas (SVAMITVA) initiative.  Launched in 2021, this initiative aims to conduct drone surveys of villages to issue e-property cards to farmers, confirming their land ownership.  He reported that e-property cards for 15,327 out of 30,515 villages are already prepared and will be distributed shortly. Security guard murder: Maharashtra court sends Latur doc to police custody

A court in Maharashtra, on Wednesday remanded a Latur doctor in police custody till December 30 in connection with the murder of a security guard employed at his hospital, news agency PTI reported. Dr Pramod Ghuge, along with his nephew Aniket Munde, was booked after the guard, Balu Bharat Dongre, died on December 12.   The doctor was apprehended in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, on Monday, following a tip-off, PTI reported. He had been on the run for several days after the Dongre's death, the police said. According to the cops in Maharashtra, Ghuge had instructed his driver to drop him in Pune, claiming he needed to attend a conference. From Pune, he travelled to Haridwar, where he was arrested. Dr Ghuge was brought back to Latur on Wednesday morning and presented before a local court, which granted the police his custody till December 30. Meanwhile, two police teams are actively on the lookout for Munde, Inspector Dilip Sagar from Maharashtra Police said. The police case stems from a complaint filed by Dongre's mother, a resident of India Nagar in Latur, at the Shivajinagar Police Station, PTI reported. She alleged that her son, who had previously been arrested in an abduction case, was brutally beaten to death at the hospital after demanding unpaid wages.  Based on the complaint, the police have registered a case under Section 302 (murder) and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code against Dr Ghuge and Munde.  According to the police, Dr Ghuge was involved in thrashing and kidnapping a lift contractor, and coerced Dongre into participating in the abduction, promising him salary without work. After Dongre's arrest in the abduction case, Dr Ghuge paid him salary for a few months, but later stopped the wages. When the guard confronted him, the doctor threatened him, they said. On December 12, Dr Ghuge informed the security guard's family that he was admitted to the hospital in critical condition. Dongre's father later found his son had died of severe injuries that indicated physical assault, according to the police. The first information report (FIR) filed by the police revealed that Dongre had gone to the hospital to demand his salary when Dr Ghuge and Munde allegedly attacked him. Dongre, who sustained serious injuries, was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). His motorcycle, parked at the hospital gate, was damaged, likely to destroy evidence.  Initially, Dr Ghuge informed the police that Dongre died from a heart attack after an accident. However, the security guard's family alleged foul play and filed the complaint, the police said. (With PTI inputs)

CM Fadnavis unveils 25-year energy roadmap for Maharashtra

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced on Wednesday that the state government has developed a comprehensive roadmap for the energy sector that spans the next 25 years, reported news agency PTI.  Speaking at a 'meet-the-press' event in Nagpur, Fadnavis emphasised the government's commitment to enhancing energy accessibility and sustainability in the state. The Chief Minister, who also oversees the energy portfolio, expressed the government's intent to reduce electricity tariffs within the next two to three years, further supporting the state's energy objectives. "The energy sector is very important, and we have prepared the roadmap for the next 25 years," the chief minister said. "We also plan to make sure houses provided to the poor under different government schemes do not get electricity bills. These homes will be covered under solar energy," he said, stated PTI. Moreover, Fadnavis highlighted the importance of expediting the completion of pending projects, particularly in the irrigation sector, which aligns with the broader goal of improving infrastructure and quality of life for residents in Maharashtra. 'Congress insulted Ambedkar; didn't want anyone to grow bigger than Nehru-Gandhi family' Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday demanded that Congress apologise to the nation for insulting Dr BR Ambedkar repeatedly, reported news agency PTI. The Opposition party distorted Union Home Minister Amit Shah's speech in Parliament, he said, speaking at a 'meet-the-press' programme. "Congress should apologise to the nation for always insulting Ambedkar. Its anxiety was that no one should grow in stature above the Nehru-Gandhi family. Congress distorted Amit Shah's comments on Ambedkar to mislead the people. BJP and Shah can not insult Ambedkar even in their dreams," Fadnavis said, reported PTI. Even his own speech in the Maharashtra Assembly where he said that Naxalites do not believe in the country 's Constitution was distorted in such a way that it appeared he did not believe in the Constitution, the chief minister said. "We now have the technology to get the entire digital footprint for identifying those who are circulating such messages," said Fadnavis who also holds the home portfolio, reported PTI. Congress also knows that EVMs are tamper-proof, but "one can not wake up someone who pretends to be sleeping," he said, reported PTI. (With inputs from PTI)

NDA leaders meet at Nadda's residence to celebrate Vajpayee's birth centenary

Leaders of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convened at the residence of BJP president J P Nadda in New Delhi on Wednesday to commemorate the birth centenary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, reported news agency PTI.  The meeting brought together prominent figures, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, JD-U leader and Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh, Apna Dal (S) president and Union Minister Anupriya Patel, as well as JD (S) leader and Union Minister H D Kumaraswamy. In addition to these leaders, the gathering also included Bihar's Hindustani Awam Morcha (S) leader Jitan Ram Manjhi, Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) president Upendra Kushwaha, a Rajya Sabha MP, and Thushar Vellappally, president of Bharath Dharma Jana Sena, PTI reported.  The meeting, however, did not release any official statement regarding its agenda, though sources indicated that discussions centered around good governance and various political issues. Good governance was a key theme of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, and the NDA members aimed to reflect on this legacy during their discussions. PTI reported.  It was also decided to hold an alliance meeting annually to honour the contributions of Vajpayee, who is renowned for successfully leading the first coalition government in India for its full term. This gathering comes at a crucial time as the NDA focuses on the proposal for simultaneous elections, with all constituent parties expressing their support for this initiative. Furthermore, a Joint Parliamentary Committee has been constituted to examine two bills related to simultaneous polls, with its first meeting scheduled for January 8. CM Nitish Kumar to lead NDA in 2025 state polls The NDA will contest the Assembly polls in Bihar next year under the leadership of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Deputy Chief Minister and BJP leader Samrat Choudhary said on Sunday. Elections to the 243-member Bihar Assembly are due in late 2025. Choudhary said, “The NDA is working under the leadership of Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Bihar and we will continue to contest elections under the leadership of both leaders.” “There is no confusion,” he said during a press conference at the BJP headquarters when asked to comment on speculation that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) could do a rethink on projecting Kumar as its leader in the polls. He was responding to Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent interview to a news channel in which he was asked if the NDA could go to the polls in Bihar without declaring a chief ministerial candidate, like it recently did with great success in Maharashtra. Congress insulted Ambedkar: Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday demanded that Congress apologise to the nation for insulting Dr B R Ambedkar repeatedly, reported news agency PTI. The Opposition party distorted Union home minister Amit Shah's speech in Parliament, he said, speaking at a 'meet-the-press' program. The Mahayuti received a massive mandate in the assembly elections as it could debunk the fake narrative used by the Opposition during the Lok Sabha polls, he said. The mandate brings a lot of expectations and challenges, he added. "As a Nagpur-kar (native of Nagpur), I want to assure you that power doesn't go to my head. I will never let you down. I believe power is a means for service," Fadnavis said, reported PTI. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule will discuss the issue of appointment of guardian ministers of districts with allies NCP and Shiv Sena, he said, adding, "Whatever decision he takes, will be binding on me. I would like to be the guardian ministers of Gadchiroli, if permitted," reported PTI. Gadchiroli in eastern Maharashtra is affected by Naxal violence. Fadnavis said Naxalism was now at an all-time low, and a lot of development is taking place in Gadchiroli district. Referring to the brutal murder of a sarpanch in Beed district, Fadnavis said his government had taken the incident seriously. "We will not tolerate lawlessness. But it is wrong to defame the Beed district," he added. (With inputs from PTI)
