All sorts of skeletons are tumbling out of the Thackeray family closet as the late Bal Thackeray’s sons are locked in a no-holds-barred battle over his will. Yesterday, the elder son Jaidev dropped a massive bombshell when he revealed that one of his sons had not been fathered by him – the only one among Jaidev’s children to be named in Balasaheb’s will.

“Aishwarya is not my son,” Jaidev declared to the stunned audience in court, after which the judge immediately adjourned for lunch and asked everyone to leave the courtroom, before continuing the hearing with only the Thackeray family members.

Aishwarya is one of the three children that Jaidev had with his second wife Smita, but the only one among them to be named in the contentious will. What’s more, he is the only one among all of Balasaheb’s grandchildren (including Uddhav Thackeray’s sons) to inherit a large chunk of property to himself. It is the 10,000 sq ft Matoshree bungalow in Bandra that is at the centre of the inheritance battle, and Balasaheb bequeathed the entire first floor – a princely 2,000 sq feet – to 18-year-old Aishwarya.

In the last hearing, Jaidev claimed that he had paid for the redevelopment of Matoshree in 1995-96, and that the first floor was supposed to be his. When the renovated four-storey bungalow was inaugurated, Jaidev had even moved in but left the very next day, he told the court. He told the judge that Balasaheb had suggested he move to Kalina because of the differences between him and his wife Smita, who continued to live on in Matoshree till 2003.

Even after she moved out, the first floor remained locked, claimed Jaidev. Uddhav Thackeray’s lawyer Rohit Kapadia asked him why he never discussed this with Balasaheb. Jaidev replied saying that when he brought it up, Balasaheb said that Aishwarya was living there.

It was this point that Uddhav’s lawyer asked Jaidev, “Is he your son?” A cornered Jaidev at first said, “I had to say this some day and bring something on record.”

Justice Gautam Patel told him to answer the question directly, and Jaidev replied, “No, Aishwarya is not my son.”

It was 2 pm, and the court broke for lunch. Upon returning at 3 pm, Justice Patel declared that the trial would now be carried out in-camera, without the presence of outsiders.
