Advocate had plotted murder with boyfriend and three others six years ago

Twenty-eight-year-old Shubha, an advocate who hatched a conspiracy to kill her husband-to-be, and three others who aided her in committing the crime over six years ago, were sentenced to life imprisonment by a city court yesterday.

Shubha had conspired to murder B V Girish, a software engineer, to whom she was engaged to in Nov 2003 to be married five months later.



According to the prosecution, Shubha along with her boyfriend Arun Verma, his cousin Dinakar alias Dinesh and Venkatesh, planned to kill Girish after her father Shankarnarayan forced her to get engaged on learning of her affair.

Arun, along with Shubha hired Venkatesh for Rs 1,500 to murder Girish, who was also her neighbour. Girish was found murdered on December 3, 2003, on the Indiranagar-Koramangala Intermediate Ring Road also known as Jumbo Point.

"Shubha on December 3, 2003, forced Girish to treat her out to a dinner and made him stop his bike near Jumbo Point. Venkatesh, who was waiting at the spot, hit him on the head with a shock absorber and sped away on Arun's bike," the police said.

Shubha was arrested in January 2004. The four accused were sentenced to life and made to pay a fine of
Rs 50,000 each.

Shubha, who masterminded the crime, was sentenced to three years additional simple imprisonment for destroying evidence and also imposed an additional penalty of Rs 25,000.

Judge V Vantigodi directed that of the total penalty of Rs 2.25 lakh imposed on the four, Rs 2 lakh should be paid as compensation to the family of the victim, Girish. In case, the accused fail to pay penalty, each would have to undergo additional simple imprisonment for three years.
