Will Pakistan ever taste peace?

Will Pakistan ever taste peace?

Bloggers are blaming the Pakistan government for the current crisis that has gripped the country. Many blogs feel that the situation has only worsened after the country embraced democracy.u00a0

Like a tired Bollywood potboiler, the current political crisis in Pakistan is a replay of the hackneyed script of the 1990's, albeit with new 'treatment', lots of twists, some new faces and situations, says this blogger in a tongue-in-cheek manner.

"In true Bollywood style, the script of the Pakistani political potboiler is a work in progress and keeps changing as the plot progresses by the day and at times by the hour. Little surprise then that the drop scene has still not been written. It will depend on the twists, turns, U-turns that the main actors make, either on the own volition or on the instructions of some of the script-writers who sit in the GHQ, Rawalpindi, and the financiers who sit in Washington," adds the blogger.

"For the moment, most Pakistanis are not exactly enamoured by the plot that is playing out before them. In fact, they are worried: worried about the slippery slope on which they find their country, worried about the growing power and influence of the Islamist militias or Taliban, worried about their daily battle for food, clothing, housing, education, health, the list is endless."

'Blame the regime'

"With their daggers drawn at each other, the short sighted, corrupt, and inept leadership of Pakistan, which is unconcerned with the problems and sensitivities of the nation and internal and external threat to the country, has once again pushed Pakistan to the brink of disaster and betrayed the confidence reposed by the people in them for a change in February 2008 general elections," says this blogger.

This blogger feels that nothing has changed for the common man except the faces, and more "intrusive interference" of the Americans and other Western countries in matters of essentially domestic jurisdiction have only added to its woes.

"Many had thought that after the easing out of military dictator Gen Pervez Musharraf, things will improve and there will be rule of law and independent judiciary, and the intelligence agencies will be reined in. But that is not the case. Parliamentary system, and perhaps the country itself, are facing the inevitable danger because the leadership is playing Trojan horse to elements of intelligence agencies and foreign players," adds the blogger.
"Embattled with poverty, lawlessness, environmental degradation, cross-boarder conflicts, and swelling population, Pakistan continues to operate under the pretext of state Islamization inspired by nuclear empowerment, state militarization, and US Aid guarantees" says this blogger.u00a0

"Corrupt and undemocratic mode of governance engineered by military and civil-bureaucracy with little to no regard for its founding principles of constitutional democracy, secularism, rule-of-law, provincial autonomy, and basic human rights, the state is once again at the brink of social and political debacle," adds the blogger.

According to this blogger,u00a0many of the extremists are not really the hardcore Taliban, but just religious mullahs who are mostly anti-America.
"None of us want to believe that the average Pakistani supports the extremist elements in Pakistan, but it is believed that there is some support. One reason why the Pakistani Army is finding it difficult to combat the Taliban is because the armymen see the extremists as a lesser evil than the United States," adds the blogger.u00a0

This blogger, feels that the US wants Pakistan to remain stable due in large part to their nuclear capabilities and also due to the role they play in helping to stop Taliban and al-Qaida influence in the region," adds this blogger.u00a0
