Ten years ago, on this day, a little known website with an unusual name published its first post, or a wiki as it is now known.
Wikipedia wasn't always the treasure trove of information it is considered today. At one time, the entries listed under certain categories were brief, if not amusing. 'Astronomer' simply said: Scientist whose area of Research is Astronomy. Sweden was just a 'country in Northern Europe. Inhabitants are called Swedes. Language spoken is Swedish. Capital is Stockholm', and 'Physics' said: Physics is a very broad subject.
Wikipedia volunteer Gareth Owen sums up the phenomenon, saying, "The problem with Wikipedia is that it only works in practice. In theory, it's a total disaster." Soon enough, practice worked in Wikipedia's favour.
On the tenth anniversary of the phenomenon, Wikimedia (the non-profit foundation behind the Wikipedia project) is today celebrating the event in six continents. You too can attend the event that's being held in the city (for free, of course) that will include a video message by Jimmy Wales, founder, Wikipedia, followed by talks on the impact of the global phenomenon.
Kundan Amitabh, Wikipedia contributor and administrator of the Angika Wiki that is still in incubation, will talk on Wikipedia and Indian languages. "People can get information on starting a Wikipedia for Indic languages, which is not all that difficult. I will demonstrate how to type the language on the web and how to make entries," says the civil engineer by profession.
