With the soaring temperatures, the 100 per cent water cut enforced by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) between Mahalaxmi and Mahim yesterday shook the routine of everyone living on that stretch. However, the worst hit were big families with school-going kids.

MiD DAY spoke to a joint family of twelve living in Kabutar Khana, Dadar (West). The Bhingarde family, who resides in a 750-sq-ft apartment, includes four senior citizens (two were out of town), three people who go to work, a housewife and four school children.

“Tuesday was manageable. However, Wednesday morning will be a major problem as water will be restored around 4 pm only,” said a family member. Taking a bath appeared to be impossible for them the next day.u00a0Yesterday, the family skipped washing clothes and used water stored in a tub to wash utensils.

They also filled the toilet flush tank using mugs rather than using the direct water from water tanks. Anagha Bhingarde (42), a housewife, said, “As we get water only from 4 pm to 7 pm daily, water cuts are a bane.” The children, used to a shower, took a bucket bath yesterday. Tanvi Bhingarde (15), an SSC student, lamented, “Two days later I have my first exam, I wont be able to wash my hair before that.”

The eldest son, Nitin Bhingarde (44), said, “My office is also at Dadar and I had to take huge cans of water to office today that also added to the shortage at home.”The family was actually glad that two members were out of town during the water cut.u00a0
