"I had a few drinks as I could not find anything to eat. Moreover, I did not know the road was one-way."

Those sleeping on the footpath were saved by gunny bags of vegetables kept there.u00a0

Anthony (29), who was one of the few to escape, said, "I would've been the first he hit had it not been for the gunny bags. He luckily missed us; he was driving too fast."

The traffic police rushed to the scene. When the alcohol test was conducted on Mahadeva it was found that he had consumed liquor above the permissible limit.

"He had over 436 ml of alcohol in his system when the permissible amount is 30 ml. Moreover, he was speeding and entered a one-way road.

His car has been impounded," said Inspector Shanmukha from the K R Market Traffic Police Station. Mahadeva has been booked for rash and negligent driving and driving under the influence of alcohol.
