Tension prevailed in the western Uttar Pradesh town of Kasganj even as the administration organised a meeting of the district peace committee yesterday morning in a bid to restore normalcy, officials said. Following the meeting, it was decided that shops and commercial establishments in the area would be opened, they said. At least three shops, two private buses and a car were torched here on Saturday, after a young man was killed in clashes following stone-pelting by a mob on a motorcycle rally taken out to celebrate the Republic Day.

"At the meeting of the peace committee, whose members include prominent citizens of the district, it was decided that the shopkeepers will open their shops and commercial establishments. There is no atmosphere of fear in the city. There have been sporadic incidents, which people of the city feel have brought shame to the place," ADG Agra, Ajay Anand, said. People put forward their points of view and concerns about the prevailing situation and the administration assured all possible help, Divisional Commissioner, Aligarh, Subhash Chandra Sharma said. Those attending the meeting were told to keep an eye on the situation and not let it deteriorate, he added.

Drones for surveillance
"The administration is acting tough on those who had indulged in the violence, based on the video evidence," Sharma said. Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), OP Singh also said drone surveillance was being conducted to maintain law and order. "The situation in Kasganj is under control. No incidents have taken place in the past few hours. Through drones we are conducting surveillance. Our priority is to maintain law and order. We had put restrictions on the Internet for few hours to restrain rumours from being spread but we took this step to maintain law and order which is our utmost priority," Singh said.

Guilty won't be spared
Terming the violence as unfortunate, UP Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma said, "...let me tell you that not a single person responsible for this incident, will be spared. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is himself monitoring the developments, and stringent punishment will be meted out to the guilty, no matter how big the guilty is or how strong his political connections are".
