Viveknagar police have busted an organised inter-state gang which would steal vehicles from other parts of the country and sell it here after changing the registration numbers.

The gang was busted after a sub-inspector got a tip-off that second-hand cars were being sold at throwaway prices. Out of curiosity, Viveknagar SI R Punith Kumar made inquiries as a prospective buyer and stumbled upon an interstate racket.

The brothers would also fabricate the documents and send it to their local contact, Akmal Khan of Gangondanahalli.

Once the stolen vehicle reached Bangalore, Akmal Khan would get the registration of vehicles changed from Uttar Pradesh to Karnataka in various RTOs with the help of a tout, Babu Siraj Ahmed. This would be done by paying a nominal fee in the RTOs and by bribing officials. Once the vehicles got a Karnataka registration number, the gang would sell them at throwaway prices.

Police have seized two tipper lorries, two Toyota Qualises, a Maruti Swift, Hyundai Getz and Toyota Camry, all worth Rs 44 lakh.

Police are also investigating if the accused stole vehicles from the state and sent them to Agra.
