Unclaimed bags lead to bomb scare in Nashik

Nashik: Two unclaimed bags found in the crowded areas of the city led to a bomb scare today but no explosives were found in them by the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad.

The bomb scare in the city happened on a day when terrorists struck in Punjab and also came at a time when Nashik and adjoining temple town of Trimbakeshwar are bustling with devotees taking part in the ongoing Kumbh Mela.

The bags were found abandoned on the crowded M G Road and near Nashik Civil Hospital this afternoon, said Hemant Somvanshi, in-charge of Sarkarwada Police Station.

Police were informed and personnel from Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BIDS) summoned to the spot. The squads examined the bags but did not find any explosive, he said.

Local BDDS chief Anand Wagh told PTI that he was informed about the unclaimed bags at around 2.45 pm following which he rushed teams to the spots.

The bags - a suitcase and a purse - were found carrying papers, a mobile-charger and clothes, he said. Tension prevailed for sometime in the city after rumours spread that "live bombs" have been found in the unattended bags, Wagh added.
