UP CM orders probe in 'dead candidate' case

Santosh Singh, the ‘dead man’ who hit the headlines recently for filing papers for presidential election has got a ray of hope now.u00a0UP Chief Minister, Akhilesh Yadav has reportedly ordered a probe into the matter to investigate how he was declared ‘dead’ and asked the UP police to file FIRs against all those who conspired against Singh.


Singh, a cook to Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, shot to fame two weeks ago when he filed his nomination papers against Pranab Mukherjee and P A Sangma for presidential elections to highlight his case.

Singh met the UP Chief Minister in Lucknow. “Akhilesh Yadav has promised me to extend all possible help and ordered the UP police to investigate the case within two months. He has ordered to file FIRs against all those who conspired against me and filed an affidavit with the authorities in Varanasi to declare me dead,” said Singh.u00a0FIRs have been registered in Lucknow by the local police after the CM’s intervention and the case will also be investigated by Lucknow police, he added.


Dead man fasting
Singh, has been sitting on a dharna at Jantar Mantar since January 8 in New Delhi pleading authorities to look into his case. MiD DAY first reported his case on January 17 (‘Dead man fasting’), when he started his agitation in Delhi.

An orphan, things took a turn for the worse for Singh when he married a Maharashtrian Dalit girl in Mumbai. Born in Varanasi, he went to Mumbai in early 2000 and worked as a cook for Bollywood actor, Nana Patekar. He married a Dalit girl in 2002 while working in Mumbai.

He had alleged that his relatives declared him dead as he married a Dalit girl and he was thrown out of the village when he returned in 2002 after the marriage. His relatives also allegedly usurped his property.
