Two fashion weeks and a trademark spat

The legal team of the Pune Fashion Week (PFW) has issued a notice to the organisers of the Pune International Fashion Week (PIFW) for violating the Copyright Act by using its trademark. The PIFW, announced early this week, is to be held during the last week of this month.

PFW spokersperson said the notice was sent a week ago, soon after they heard of the new event. Mahesh Chugh, vice-president, PFW, said the use of the PFW trademark by anybody else was a case of encroachment.

"The Pune Fashion Week is a private limited company. We have completely two years and our trademark cannot be used by anybody else," said Chugh. "When we heard about the Pune International Fashion Week, we thought of sending the notice after consulting the legal team. As we have already registered the name, no one can use the same name. We haven't yet received any reply."

But Jazzmatazz, the organiser of PIFW, said it has not violated any law. "I haven't received any notice so far and I am not using the trademark of Pune Fashion Week," said Sajid, director of Jazzmatazz. "The trademark of my event is already registered by my company. If I had used PFW, maybe it would have been wrong, but it is not the case."
