Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik has ordered all officials to be more alert and keep an eye out on luxury hotels, which might be used as gambling dens
Cops across the city have increased their vigil against gambling after receiving strict orders from Commissioner of Police Arup Patnaik. The commissioner asked his troops to be more alert during this festive period in the month of Shravan, as more people tend to gamble during this period. However, he has asked his troops to be careful and take sufficient precautions before raids, as those who gamble during this time include several high-profile citizens.

On August 6, 2012 Patnaik passed an order (copy available with MiD DAY), stating that during this occasion several citizens book rooms in luxury hotels or gather at their friends’ homes to gamble. He has also asked the authorities to keep an eye out on women’s kitty parties.
Many posh localities of the city including Colaba, Malabar Hill, Zaveri Bazaar, Ghatkopar, Mulund, Chembur and Dombivli have been put under the scanner.
Commenting on the order, a source in the force said, “These gatherings are very secretive and are known to a selected few. In an attempt to keep their gambling activities hidden from the police, these people book rooms in five-star hotels, as we mostly don’t raid hotels. The order states that we need to crackdown on gambling and keeping that aim in mind, all officials have been asked to be vigilant.”
He added that the order also stated that before any action was to be taken, the zonal deputy commissioner should be informed. “Some people gamble to keep the spirit of Shravanio Jugar alive but many of them take advantage of the season for a proper gambling game,” said another police official.
Confirming the same, Mumbai Police spokesperson Nisar Tamboli said, “We have issued an order asking officials to be more alert and ensure that no gambling takes place. However, we have also told them to ensure that sufficient precautions are taken before carrying out raids.”u00a0
