Eleven bodies have been recovered from a spot in north Kashmir's Kupwara district where a passenger vehicle was hit by a huge avalanche of snow, an official said yesterday. Two others have been rescued by teams of police, army, State Disaster Response Force and Mountain Rescue. A one-year-old child is among those who died after the avalanche hit the vehicle.
The incident took place at Sadhna Top in Tangdhar area of the district on Friday. The people were reportedly on their way from Kupwara to Karnah in a Tata Sumo. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti today expressed grief and sorrow over the incident, an official spokesman said. The chief minister conveyed her sympathies to the bereaved families, he said.
Meanwhile, Minister for Disaster Management, Javaid Mustafa Mir, announced a compensation of R4 lakh each to the next of kin of those killed in the snow avalanche.
