Relatives claim the deputy commissioner beat them up over a petty issue

"He never gave me an ounce of respect, but I didn't expect him to treat us this way," said Shama Akhtar. It all started with a phone call. At 9 pm on Saturday, Shama Hafiz had called her elder son Shamim Akhtar to inquire about her other son Shakeel's whereabouts, as he was ill. Shamim is a deputy commissioner in the sales tax department; his office is located at ITO.

"I had just called to ask him in which hospital Shakeel was admitted, but he started shouting at me, and within an hour he had reached our home. He started beating my children. At that moment I tried to escape evading his notice to approach my neighbours for help. He caught me on the third floor staircase, got hold of my neck and threw me in the air so that I landed on the second floor," said Shama, 62.

"He's my eldest son and is in a very good position as well, but I have never approached him during any problems. My husband's pension is enough to feed our ten-member family. If I need more money, I'll rather beg from a stranger than approach him," Shama said.

"I am doing my BBA from Pune. I haven't had a word with him for eight years; suddenly he appeared at our door and started strangulating me. I am struggling to speak even now as my throat is aching badly. Shamim bhaiya had a temper since his childhood. He gets angry even in small arguments; our father had never denied him his demands. He was given whatever he needed. I don't know why he's angry with us; he never behaves this way with his wife and children, it's only with us," said Akil Akhtar, Shamim's younger brother.

The family is in a state of panic. "He started beating everyone at home for no reason; my whole body is aching even now. I am scared he may come back anytime if he's not arrested. We don't know for what reason the police haven't filed an FIR yet. He's my brother, I don't want him to suffer but we cannot let a person attack us and walk free. He should be punished for his deeds. I know my brother; if he's not punished he'll surely come back and repeat his performance. Luckily this time my brother Akil was there to protect us, but very soon he'll be leaving for his studies", said Noorie, Shamim's sister.

A police official said: "We've started our investigation. It's a baseless case; the family is trying to frame him. He's staying away from home just to live in peace. He went to his mother's place to give some papers regarding Shakeel's treatment."
When contacted by MiD DAY Shamim Akhtar refused to comment on the matter.
