The two Masters

>> He’s called ‘a senior disciple and personal student of Grandmaster Choa Kok Sui, the founder of PRANIC HEALING®’.

And his writings talk about his passion for this alternative science that’s gaining ground even amongst the medical community.

Anjali and Sachin Tendulkar with Master Stephen Co

But when India’s iconic Sachin Tendulkar and pretty wife Anjali were featured with New Age Healer Master Stephen Co on his website, with the comment ‘Mr and Mrs Sachin Tendulkar after healing with mco,’ along with picture of said healer with Hema Malini, you can be sure there’s going to be much traction.

After all Tendulkar is the subcontinent’s most powerful brand ambassador isn’t he?

But except for his ‘To our Indian Friends, hope you enjoy these photos of people dear to all our hearts’ the Master does not divulge more.

The mind boggles.

Turning a fabulous fifty in London
>> So it was London’s party of the year when Sandeep Khosla (the ebullient half of celebrated design duo Abu and Sandeep) turned 50 this weekend.

Amitabh Bachchan and Laxmi Mittal

“The birthday was brought in a day earlier at Tramps,” revealed a rather big little bird. “And the next day at a sit down black tie dinner at Café Royale, where the likes of Amitabh, Abhishek, Jaya Bachchan, Shwetta Nanda, Laxmi Mittal and Karan Johar celebrated over pink champagne!”

Sandeep Khosla

And were the women wearing their favourite Abu-Sandeep outfits in tribute of the designer label we enquired?

Not this time we were informed. “They were mostly in LBDs!”

The Beautiful and the Brave
>> Because us hacks get to go every where and meet every one, we found ourselves sitting across the one and only Angelina Jolie not too long ago at a press conference at Mumbai’s Taj.

She was there along with the film’s cast and crew to promote A Mighty Heart, based on Mariane Pearl’s book of the same name about the tragic killing of her husband Daniel.

Angelina Jolie

And so — though her minders had made it clear that the star was only there to talk about her film — we couldn’t resist trying to plumb some more interesting depths.

We recall attempting to ask Jolie about her wilder, darker past, which made her far more heroic a person and better copy in any case.

But no sooner had we lobbed our question that we realized that a pall dropped over the gathering and after a stunned pause a more banal subject was turned to.

Sad, because Angelina Jolie is much more than just a major Hollywood star or even the possessor of the world’s most feisty right leg!
She is a modern day heroine — someone who has transcended her personal demons to become a symbol of hope and strength the world over.

Which is why on hearing that she had undergone a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of breast cancer recently we are not surprised.

Her action turns on its head the concept women being regarded as sexual objects alone and will foster a brave dialogue on gender and health issues as few others so far.

“Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be proactive and to minimize the risk as much I could,” Jolie writes. “I made a decision to have a preventive double mastectomy. I started with the breasts, as my risk of breast cancer is higher than my risk of ovarian cancer, and the surgery is more complex,” she said to the NYT yesterday.

Respect!

Is my sexuality really OK?
>> With a title as alluring as ‘Is my sexuality really OK?’ the mail cannot be faulted for attempting to divest itself of the predictable nudge nudge wink wink approach when it comes to Tantric massage.

‘Tantric massage is based on the assumption that our sexuality is good, perfect, permanent, constant, everlasting, stable, divine and more,’ it says.

Now we’ve been twice around the planet and then some and can spot a sleazy enterprise from a mile off but something about this one (sent to us by an impeccable source) makes it appear like the genuine article.

“They have these sessions in Mumbai, even Ahmedabad. Typically in a room at a reputed Sobo five star hotel,” we were informed by our source.

“People have issues with their sexuality, through their own making or from society,” says the mail. ‘The task of a tantric practitioner (is) to hand people opportunities to be reminded that their sexuality is an amazing benchmark for their own well-being.’

With an intriguing calendar that declares: 23 to 30 May in UAE; 3 to 12 June in India, and all the time in Qatar, Kuwait, Spain etc and a Spanish sounding name with an address in Malaga, the workshops (soon to come to a hotel near you) sound just the kind of thing that post reform, white bread, middle aged, urban couples would sign up for.

So the next time you go to your favourite neighbourhood five-star hotel and run in to your average Mr and Mrs Plain Joe in the lobby — do give them a second glance!

Incidentally, here’s the reason why we think it’s aimed at the demographics we mentioned, the sign off line says: “It is the most cost effective investment you can ever make in your lifetime.” (Giggle)

Graphic in Berlin
>> And word comes in that noted Indian graphic novelist Sarnath Banerjee whose books include The Harappa Files (Harper Collins), is ensconced in Berlin working on a clever and quirky new comic strip, “Enchanted Geography”,

Sarnath Banerjee

“It’s been more than a year and a half since New Delhi lost artist Sarnath Banerjee to Berlin,” writes art writer Rosalyn D’mello in the highly readable site Blouin Artinfo: ‘His intrigue with (this) metropolitan hub has begun to surface in the new comic strip he’s developed for The Hindu,’ she writes.
