An elevator in Mumbai's KJ Somaiya hospital came crashing down on Thursday, leaving 10 people injured.
Around 10 people were reportedly injured at the KJ Somaiya hospital in central Mumbai’s Sion suburb on Thursday at around 4.30 pm after a lift’s cable snapped, sending its occupants plummeting down.u00a0

While doctors at the hospital say that not more than seven people were in the elevator when the mishap occurred, others, including the injured patients, claim that the lift was filled beyond it's capacity with around 22 people being present when the cord gave away.
Speaking to MiD DAY, Savita More, one of the injured patients, said, "My relative’s admitted to the hospital for heart surgery and when I entered the lift, there were several other people there. Once it reached the first floor, we felt the lift collapsing and before I knew it, I was in pain crammed up against other people."
The 26-year-old sustained minor fractures to her back and leg. "I took X-rays and thankfully, I will be given a discharge tomorrow morning," she added.
61-year-old Vikas Surve, was going visiting his ailing daughter at the hospital, is also undergoing treatment in the hospital after sustaining injuries to his left leg.
Vikas’ son Navin said, "The lift’s capacity is only 12 people, but my father said that there were approximately 22 people inside and because of that, the lift gave away. This was the only functioning lift meant for visitors."
"The liftman sustained serious injuries and most of the people around 10-12 were students from the hospital," added Navin.
However, when MiD DAY contacted a doctor from the hospital said, "Though I was not in the hospital when the incident took place, we were informed that only 5-7 people were inside and most of them were students. However, none of them sustained serious injuries and were treated only on an OPD basis."
Officers from Wadala and Chunabhatti police station rushed to the hospital and probing the incident to determine the cause of the mishap and the final number of injured.
When contacted, a sub-inspector from Wadala police station said, "Only two people were injured, one sustained fractures and the other minor injuries after the lift collapsed from the first floor of the hospital building."
