The CBI special court has reserved the quantum of punishment for fake stamp paper scam kingpin Abdul Karim Lala Telgi, ex-cop T G Sangram Singh and other accused in the case.
Telgi's advocate requested the court, trying the fake stamp paper cases pertaining to Karnataka, to consider making the sentence concurrent with his previous and subsequent sentences.
"He has already been convicted under Section 255 and other offences in both the cases in the state as well as elsewhere. He was also sentenced to life imprisonment in the MOCOA court in Mumbai. Hence, the punishment should be made concurrent for a similar offence,'' M T Nanaiah said.
He referred to Section 427 of the Criminal Procedure Code and said there was provision for concurrence of punishment. He also quoted a high court judgment in this regard.
Telgiu00a0 was present before the court through video conferencing from Parappana Agrahara prison along with four other accused.
The counsel for former ACP Sangram Singh requested the court to consider his one year and nine months in jail, spent as an undertrial, as the punishment keeping in view his service and illness.
"He is suffering from diabetes and his wife too is a diabetic.
The maximum punishment for Sangram Singh would be up to three years, while he has already spent a year and nine months in prison,'' he said.
Judge Chandrashekhar Patil adjourned the pronouncement of punishment at 3 pm. Later, he reserved the quantum of punishment for Friday.
