Swedish five-member dark rock band Katatonia's concert at this year's Mood Indigo is one of the most highly anticipated shows on the IIT campus. Katatonia founder and lead vocalist Jonas Renkse says in an exclusive email interview, "I keep hearing more and more about India being a real cool place to play. It's great that we have finally got some gigs over there. It's long overdue. I'm really looking forward to our visit. The entire band is excited."

Katatonia has been slotted into several genres including death metal, goth rock and doom metal. The band surprises in its arrangementsu00a0-- both vocal and instrumentalu00a0-- there's none of the heavy distortion or gruff vocals synonymous with metal. Although metal fans will relate to the spirit and songwritingu00a0-- bleak, heavy and filled with grief.

The band, which has admitted to being inspired by the likes of Jeff Buckley, The Cure and Fields of The Nephilim, is big on melody. In fact, they braved all the flak they received for shifting to a softer sound, in the late 90s, with their album Discouraged Ones. "It was not liked by our fans, but most people thought it was a natural development. We believe in innovation," says Renkse.
The band will perform tracks from their last album Night is the New Day, that released last year, besides crowd favourites such as Evidence, Teargas and Soil's Song. "We are more likely to do a mixed playlist," offers Renkse, "There are many people who have always heard about us and our songs but never in a concert and hence we feel the audience should get to hear the songs that they always wanted us to perform. There are people who have waited to see us."
