Ruling out criticism regarding the state-board delayed SSC result this year, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education chairman Gangadhar Mhamane has said that last year’s result date of June 7 was an exception, and that there is no need to compare this year’s result date with it.

“See the SSC results dates in the last five years. For two years in a row, it was declared on June 17, while in one year, the date was June 13, making 2013, in which the results were declared on June 7 an exception,” Mhamane said, soon after declaring the SSC results from the MSBSHSE headquarters in Pune.

Incidentally, before the year 2013, state school education minister Rajendra Darda had announced the SSC results date, thus forcing the state board to come up with the results on the particular dates.

Asked if it wasn’t up to the authority of the state board, which is an autonomous body, to declare the result dates, he replied, “It does not make any difference whether we declare the result dates or the government declares it.”

Stressing how difficult it was for the officials to declare the SSC results in the first half of June, the board chairman said, “The number of student has increased compared to last year. There was a paper on the new subject of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in this year’s exams. Besides, the repeater students had appeared for the old syllabus, and this ultimately led to an increase in the load on the overall assessment process.”

Until yesterday, the helpline numbers started by the state board itself were flooding with calls from anxious student and parents, and their first question was: Why are the results getting delayed?

“Students were really frustrated as the result is delayed compared to last year. So till couple of days back I was answering questions on why the Board is delaying it like never before,” B D Garud, Psychology professor in Abashaheb Garware College, who is working as councellor, said.
