This key ring-cum-bottle opener was designed keeping in mind the cheeky male mind, says its maker, Bali-based Sam Deslandes

Bali-based designer Sam Deslandes is upfront when he explains the thought behind the Key Ring Leg Opener. "I designed it keeping the male psyche in mind. It needed to be techie, functional and compact, but with a sense of humour... essentially male," he says of a bottle opener shaped like a sleek female leg, which also doubles up as a key ring.

Deslandes designs under a label called Fire Monkey Empire, a Sydney based firm. Originally from Australia and now based out of Bali, the 42 year-old says great design usually follow function, but this time, form followed the pun aka the Leg Opener.

"The design process did involve careful research of both, women's legs and the mechanics of opening beer bottles. Both were quite inspirational," he jokes. But it was business partner Steve Martinez who first hit upon the idea of a leg-shaped opener, admits Deslandes. "Steve had the original idea. It occurred to him one night with friends over beer, beer and more beer."

What there is no confusion about is that it's a conversation starter. "We have proven it time and again. The jokes just keep coming and everyone loves the tactile quality of the solid stainless steel," he says.
