To be fair, we walked into Blues on a day when most of the space was taken over for a kid's birthday bash. Why a sports bar was chosen for this purpose is beyond our comprehension. With buntings, glitter and pink floss splashed across its interiors, the space demanded more than a dekko, to appreciate the sporty vibe behind this temporary garb.
A precariously suspended vintage motorcycle, car name plates, skeleton-meets-scarecrow mannequins, memorabilia from The Beatles and Elvis and assorted team flags of IPL teams and EPL clubs made for a potpourri of themes. A jukebox in the corner was thrown in. Sports? Music? Garage? We were too hungry to deliberate the defining theme.
The genial staff ensured the candy flossy overkill didn't distract our attention from the obvious. We were told that the expectedly popular hookahs weren't in operation, keeping in mind the average age of the birthday party junta in the house. A swift CD change ensured nursery rhymes made way for notorious B.I.G. We plumbed for an Assorted Veg Kebab Platter (Small, Rs 229), recommended by our table attendant.
For drinks, I took a shot in the dark (there wasn't much light) opting for one the Barman's Specials -- Peach Flavoured Mojito (Rs 195) while my cautious companion played safe with a Gin Gordon (Small, Rs 180). Since Blues and Zayka'z Grill come under the same management, one also has the option of choosing from an Indian cuisine menu, apart from Blues', which comprised of the typical salad-pasta-pizza-nibbles variants. This kebab platter was an instant hit. From its corn and paneer versions, the portions were well-done, humongous and the chatpatau00a0 interlude was a riot to kick off the evening. The Mojito didn't disappoint; its peachy flavours left a subtle aftertaste.
Akon's weepy vocals interrupted our conversation, as did the attendant who checked on us for refills at regular intervals. By now, the kiddie entourage had packed up and we were realised that we could've been at our own private party, DJ et al.
Semi-full; we ordered our mains -- Oriental Chicken Salad (Rs 129) and the Executive Veg Sizzler (Rs 199). The portions could've accounted for at least one more hungry soul at our table. While the salad got a thumbs up for its freshness and generous chunks of tender chicken pieces, the sizzler was strictly middle-of-the-road. It summed up the overall vibe at this new lounge.
