Slumdog hairstylist is latest celebrity

The success of Slumdog Millionaire has worked wonders for those associated with the film. Likewise, life of Homai Billimorea, a city-based hair-stylist who worked for the film, has changed 180 degrees, making her a celebrity of sorts.

a cut above the rest: Homai Billimorea with Danny Boyle, the director of Slumdog Millionaire

Aanchal Kurmi speaks to Billimorea about her first-ever film assignment and the success that it has brought her.

What was your reaction to Slumdog Millionaire's success at the Oscars?

I was sure that we'll bag at least a couple of awards and I was counting on A R Rahman. However, I had never imagined that the movie would get eight Oscars. It was really nice to see the movie get such recognition.

You too would have loved to be with the team at Oscars...
Like anyone, even I would have loved to go there and be with the team. But as they don't have nominations for the best hairstylist category, I missed the opportunity to be a part of the festivities at Los Angeles. I hope that the Academy will add a category for hairstyling in the future.

How was the experienceu00a0 of working with Danny Boyle?
It was simply great and I would love to work with him again. He worked hard on the sets and made the entire crew do so. In fact, he was the first person to be on the sets and the last one to leave. He was a source of inspiration for many people on the sets.

Your comments on Freida Pinto's look for the red carpet...
She was looking gorgeous in the John Galliano blue net gown and the way she had done her hair was remarkable.

And how about her look in the movie?
I didn't have much scope to style her in the film, as her character demanded more of a 'girl next-door' look. However, during promotions, I did give her a glamorous look. Actually, Freida has a beautiful face and she looks more attractive with her hair pulled back with a little fringe on the forehead.

After the success of the film, even your salon would be swarming with people...
The response is overwhelming. People are calling me continuously to congratulate for the success of the film, thus making me feel like a celebrity.
Also, I am getting a lot of inquiries for the academy, which we run. Now it seems hair styling has gone to a different level and people are taking it quite seriously.

So now, after Slumdog Millionaire, which other movies do you have in your kitty?
I'm doing one untitled project with Warner Bros and I'm hoping for some more exciting offers to come by.
