In their signature pugnacious style, Shiv Sena party workers from Maval protested against Sahara Group chief Subrata Roy at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, by throwing black paint on the board that read Subrata Roy Sahara Stadium (the erstwhile name of the venue), and shouting slogans against Roy.

Talegaon police took the agitators into custody, but later released them after issuing a warning.

Roy is in judicial custody at Tihar Jail where he was sent by the Supreme Court for not complying with its order on refunding around Rs 20,000 crore of investors money.

Protesting Shiv Sainiks also demanded that the MCA Stadium be renamed after ‘Sant Tukaram Maharaj’. Around 50 party workers, under the leadership of Sena’s Maval district vice-president Bharat Thakur, gathered outside the arena at about 10.30 am yesterday.

They entered into a scuffle with the security guards and barged into the stadium premises. Raising slogans against Roy, the demonstrators went on to deface a name board.

“Citizens from Maval are feeling ashamed to have Roy’s name associated with the stadium. That is why we are demanding that his name be removed, and instead, the stadium should bear the name of Sant Tukaram Maharaj,” demanded Thakur. He also gave a memorandum to stadium managers Ravindra Singh and Vinayak Dravid.
