Shah Rukh surrogacy saga: Jaslok Hospital threatens to sue lawyer for defamation

Mumbai’s Jaslok Hospital has served a legal notice to a lawyer for maligning the image of the institution by making false accusations regarding the alleged sex determination tests undertaken by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan and his wife.

Varsha Deshpande of Lek Ladki Abhiyan, an NGO involved in clamping down on sex determination tests, had filed a complaint against Shah Rukh, the trustees of Jaslok Hospital and Dr Firuza Parikh, Director of Jaslok’s IVF Centre. She had alleged that the parties involved had allegedly violated the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Act after media reports claimed that the couple was expecting their third child through surrogacy and it would be a baby boy.

A legal notice was served to advocate Deshpande who had complained to the state health department about the illegality of the PNDT tests.

Following the report, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) health officials had visited the Bollywood actor’s house.

Dr. Firuza Parikh, who helped actor Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao have a baby through surrogacy, and the hospital have clarified that they were not involved in the affair.

Jaslok’s notice further stated that Deshpande had 24 hours to publicly apologise, failing which she will be held responsible for defamation and maligning the hospital’s name.

Despite repeated attempts to contact Deshpande, she remained unavailable for comment.
