While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been making great noise about cracking down on the problems of illegal banners recently, its own ruling party, the Shiv Sena, has been sullying an upscale area in Dadar with huge banners and a dizzying array of flags to advertise an ongoing kabbadi tournament.

While leaders of different political parties have sworn to keep the city free of banners, they seem to have done little to pass on the message to their own workers. For the past two days, the Prabhadevi area has been drenched in orange, with Shiv Sena flags and posters for the Yuva Chashak tournament defacing the area.
More than 50 flags line either side of the road. Since the High Court’s order asking the civic body to remove all banners at the earliest, the BMC has stopped issuing permission for the pasting of the same. The civic body officials have also held meetings with group leaders to dissuade them from posting banners. But going by the display at Prabhadevi, their efforts have been in vain.
An officer from the licence department said, requesting anonymity, “In the recent past, we have not given any permission for the display of any kind of flags or banners. The leaders had promised to help us by refraining from pasting banners, and we believed them.
We will start taking serious action and also fast-track the banner policy.” Mayor Sunil Prabhu, who is a Shiv Sena member, said, “I am sure they must have taken all the necessary permissions. When we organise such a big event, everything is done legally and with prior permissions.”u00a0
