GIRLS in Pune are often seen covering their faces with a scarf while riding a two-wheeler. This popular practice came under scrutiny by Pune police as the city was gearing up for Republic Day celebrations.

Policemen posted on check posts, courteously asked the girls to remove the scarf and are also asked to provide identity documents.

Joint Commissioner of Police Rajendra Sonawane refused to discuss the security issue.

The Wakefield Chowk before Pune Airport is witnessing heavy presence of security guards, every vehicle including two wheelers, autorickshaws and cars on their way to airport are checked and only then allowed to pass.

All guests at five star hotels were being frisked and their vehicles are checked before giving them entry.

"The security this time is unprecedented. There is heavy presence of police officials at the Agakhan Palace.

Only one vehicle at a time is being allowed to pass through," Sandip Bondre, an eyewitness, told Mid DAY.

"Barricades have been erected on Singhgad Road. Although security is always high prior to Republic Day, this year it looks to be more," a businessman added.
