In the wake of the terror attack in Gurudaspur on Monday, authorities at Nagpur Central Jail have decide to increase security in the prison, where Yakub Memon is currently lodged.

The Supreme Court, which heard Yakub’s mercy petition today, referred the plea seeking stay of his scheduled execution on July 30 to a larger bench. Apart from the 1993 Mumbai blasts convict, gangster Arun Gawli is also lodged in the same jail.

Earlier, only one constable was posted at the gate of the jail, despite it being viewed as a potential terror target ever since news of Yakub’s likely hanging became public.

Jail sources said it is short staffed and have called employees from all other jails. Meanwhile, Nagpur Police Commissioner SP Yadav decided to deploy quick response team (QRT) on Tuesday outside the jail.

The jail authorities and the prisoners were seen in pictures fencing the jail with bamboos.

Nakabandis are being carried on in the city from Tuesday morning to check for any terror suspects.
