If things work out as per plans chalked out by the MMRDA for Santacuz-Chembur Link Road (SCLR) after missing 12 deadlines since the project’s inception in 2003, motorists will be able to use it by next March. SCLR is the is the city’s second east-west arterial connector and will join Western Express Highway (WEH) to the Eastern Express Highway (EEH).

Confirming the news, an MMRDA official said, “The work on SCLR is in progress and we are confident of completing the project by March 2014. Once done, commuters can zip from WEH to EEH in no time. Earlier, we were going to complete the work by October-December 2013, but the project got delayed because we could not launch girders in the monsoon at Kurla station.”

Once completed, the Link Road would connect Santacruz to Chembur bypassing Kalina and Kurla. In 2010, when the World Bank was funding the project, Roberto Zagha, the India head of the financial institution, referred to SCLR as the world’s most delayed road project. MiD DAY too had reported how the project cost has increased from an estimated Rs 114.8 crore to Rs 428 crore.

As per the initial plan, the groundwork for the link road was to start in September 2003 but began only in 2007.

Once completed, the SCLR will reduce travelling time drastically from the current 90-120 minutes to just 20 minutes.
