Drugs valued at Rs 6.13 crore seized in Mizoram, three held

The Crime Investigation Department (CID) of Mizoram Police in a major drug haul, have seized huge drugs worth over Rs 6.13 crore and arrested three people including a Myanmar national and a juvenile, officials said on Wednesday. A senior CID official said that the drugs -- 40.034 kg Methamphetamine tablets valued at over Rs 5.20 crore and 3.098 kgs of heroin valued at Rs 92.94 lakh – were seized from two different places in Aizawl district. The official said that the two arrested persons as well as the juvenile in conflict with the law along with the seized drugs were handed over to a special narcotics police station. The highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets, also known as Yaba tablets or party tablets, contain a mix of methamphetamine and caffeine and are largely misused as high-dosage drugs in Bangladesh and neighbouring countries, besides India. Smuggling of drugs from Myanmar is rampant in Mizoram and the Assam Rifles, Mizoram Police and other law enforcing agencies regularly confiscate various drugs including heroin and methamphetamine tablets, a popular drug among the drug addict people. Officials, citing the drug peddlers, said that the Methamphetamine tablets, heroin and areca nuts were smuggled from neighbouring Myanmar. Mizoram shares 510 km and 318 km of unfenced border with Myanmar and Bangladesh respectively. Out of the state's 11 districts, most of the smuggling of drugs, explosives and other contraband from Myanmar takes place through Champhai district, adjoining Myanmar. After the military takeover in conflict-ridden Myanmar in February 2021, the smuggling of various drugs including Methamphetamine tablets and heroin as well as areca nuts from the neighbouring country increased to a large extent. Cabinet clears ‘one nation, one election’ plan

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal for ‘one nation, one Election’ as recommended by the Kovind panel, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The report of the high-level committee on ‘one nation, one election’ was placed before the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. The panel headed by former president Ram Nath Kovind had submitted the report in March ahead of the announcement of Lok Sabha elections. Vaishnaw said the report was approved unanimously. Placing the report before the Cabinet was a part of the law ministry’s 100-day agenda. The high-level committee had recommended simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies as the first step followed by synchronised local body polls within 100 days. A voter posing after casting his vote during the Lok Sabha election in May 2024 in Maharashtra. Pic/Satej Shinde The panel had also proposed setting up of an ‘Implementation Group’ to look into the execution of the recommendations made by the committee. The panel also recommended the preparation of a common electoral roll and voter ID cards by the Election Commission of India (ECI) in consultation with state election authorities. At present, the ECI is responsible for the Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, while the local body polls for municipalities and panchayats are managed by state election commissions. The panel recommended as many as 18 Constitutional amendments, most of which will not need ratification by state Assemblies. Not practical: Mallikarjun Kharge Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said ‘one nation, one election’ was not practical and alleged that the BJP comes up with such things to divert attention from real issues when elections approach. His remarks came after the report of the high-level committee on ‘one nation, one election’ was placed before the Union Cabinet. Asked about the issue, Kharge said, “It is not practical. It will not work. When elections come, and they are not getting any issues to raise, then they divert attention from real issues.” BJP’s ‘cheap stunt’: Derek O’Brien Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Derek O’Brien on Wednesday called ‘one nation, one election’ a “cheap stunt” of the BJP, and questioned why Maharashtra elections were not announced with Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir if the government wants simultaneous elections. “One nation, one election is just another cheap stunt by the anti-democratic BJP. Why were Maharashtra elections not announced along with elections in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir?” O’Brien said. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation completes longest twin tunnel in phase-IV

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has completed the first twin tunnel breakthrough as part of its Phase-IV construction works, an official statement said. With the twin tunnels stretching approximately 3 kilometres, it is the longest built under this phase of the project, the statement read. According to the official statement, the two tunnel boring machines (TBMs), named Bhoomi and Srishti, emerged simultaneously at Pulbangash Metro Station on Wednesday, marking the completion of the twin tunnels connecting Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash on the Janakpuri West-R K Ashram corridor, an extension of the Magenta line. "Both TBMs were successfully retrieved at Pulbangash Metro Station on Wednesday, in just over 14 months, covering a length of approximately 2,997 metres, at an average rate of 8.2 metres per tunnel per day. This is also the longest tunnelling drive (almost 3 km) in DMRC’s Phase IV works," the statement said. The event was attended by Dharmendra, Chief Secretary of Delhi, and Dr. Vikas Kumar, Managing Director of DMRC. Anuj Dayal, Principal Executive Director of Corporate Communications at DMRC, expressed pride in the accomplishment and reiterated the organization’s commitment to delivering safe and efficient transport infrastructure for the residents of Delhi. "Afcons is executing the DC-05 package that includes six underground stations, tunnelling of 14.4km including crossover, 10 cross passages, and 170m open and underground ramp. Today 3 km of twin tunnelling has been completed from Derawal Nagar to Pulbangash," the company said in a statement. The twin tunnels were excavated at a depth of 14-15 meters, passing through densely populated areas such as Rana Pratap Bagh and Punjabi Basti Colony, and crossing beneath the Najafgarh drain, a structurally sensitive zone. Despite the challenges of tunnelling through submerged water conditions and navigating the under-construction Ghanta Ghar station, no damage was caused to any structures, it said in the statement. The tunnels, with an internal diameter of 5.8 metres, feature six cross passages which will connect the two for passenger safety. The civil work for this section was carried out by the contractor, M/s Afcons. The deployment of TBM Bhoomi began on June 18, 2023, and TBM Srishti followed on August 19, 2023. ‘One nation, one election’ not practical, says Congress President Kharge

Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge reacted to the high-level committee report on ‘One nation, one election’ on Wednesday and said that the idea is “not practical." He also blamed the Bharatiya Janata Party government for diverting attention from real issues, reported PTI. Kharge’s remarks came after the proposal of 'One nation, one election' was approved before the Union Cabinet. At a press conference, Kharge said, "It is not practical. It will not work. When elections come, and they are not getting any issues to raise, then they divert attention from real issues." The 'One nation, one election' report was submitted to the Union Cabinet in March ahead of the Lok Sabha Elections. The proposal was submitted by a panel headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, PTI reported. The Union Cabinet approved the ‘One nation, one election’ plan on Wednesday, moving the country closer to holding simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha and state Assemblies. The bill allowing for simultaneous polling is expected to be tabled during the next winter session of Parliament, stated media reports.  According to a news report, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said 'One nation, one election' is to be carried out in two phases, emphasising that the proposal was embraced by large number of parties.  "Over 80 per cent of the respondents supported simultaneous polls. The opposition parties may face pressure from within to support it," Vaishnaw said  While National Democratic Alliance's allies like Janata Dal (United) and Chirag Paswan's Lok Janshakti Party has supported the plan, Opposition parties such Congress, Aam Aadmi Party and Shiv Sena (UBT) still stand opposed to the idea of simultaneous polls, claiming that it will favour the ruling party at the Centre. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress lawmaker Derek O'Brien called the approval of the report as a “cheap stunt” from the Union Government, reported PTI.  “Why were the Maharashtra elections not announced along with the polls in Haryana and Jammu-Kashmir? Here’s why. The Maharashtra government announced the ‘Ladki Bahin’ scheme in the budget this June. The first tranche reached the bank accounts of women in August and the second tranche will reach beneficiaries in October. You cannot do three states in one go and you talk about ONOE [One nation, one poll],” he said.
