Astrologers had predicted miscarriages during the eclipse, but thankfully, all new-borns we tracked are fine

Astrologers had predicted pregnant women would have miscarriages during yesterday's eclipse, but MiD DAY found it was just a false alarm.

The private hospitals had a slightly different story to tell.

In Jayanagar, Sagar Apollo Hospital and The Cradle, which offer posh maternity services, did not deliver any babies last morning.

The last delivery at Sagar Apollo was at 5 pm on Tuesday. The next took place at 2 pm yesterday. It was not clear if the predictions had scared off their clientele.

FALSE ALARM: All deliveries in Bowring Hospital during the eclipse were found to be safe.

Sachindananda Babu, the astrologer who had appeared on a Kannada channel and predicted a dire day for would-be mothers, said, "I said the impact of the eclipse would last nine to 10 months. I have been researching astrology for 34 years and my predictions have come true."

Babu, son of the well-known astrologer B V Raman, said scientists who argued with him often visited him and sought solutions to their problems.

"Isn't this hypocrisy?" he wondered.

But the rationalists are saying they won the day, and the failure of dire predictions had exposed the astrologers.

"An eclipse is a natural phenomenon, and astrologers exploit innocent people.

They assume problems and suggest solutions. Muslims and Christians don't believe in any eclipse rituals and don't care about its effects," said M Sreedhara Murthy, who teaches psychology at NMKRV College for Women.
