The dreaded criminal was on the run since 2006 and was involved in the murder of the then Hassan Superintendent of Police.

Charan (32) was wanted in over 20 cases of murder, dacoity and kidnapping in the city.

He began his criminal career with police constable Shashi Kumar alias Shashidhar from Channarayapatna and was involved in looting and kidnapping north Indian students.

In 2006, he and his gang members, including Kumar, hired a car and killed the driver at an isolated spot on the outskirts. The vehicle was then used to kidnap two medical students.

While they were on their way to a safe house in Mandya, Thammaiah intercepted them and arrested the gang including Kumar, but Charan managed to escape.

Kumar along with the other gang members were sent to Mandya jail. He, however, was enraged at not being treated leniently since he was a constable, so he gave Charan supari for Thammaiah and had him killed at Yelahanka shortly after that.

Pulakeshinagar ACP B B Ashok Kumar said, "He is notorious and is involved in the murder of SP Thammaiah. He has been absconding since 2006 and on Sunday we succeeded in catching him. Along with constable hashidhar, he is involved in over 20 cases. We have him in custody now and will investigate further."

Similar crime
Charan and his gang members have been involved in a similar case earlier. They rented a vehicle in Mysore and were spotted by two locals while they were killing the driver in Mandya.

That night Charan murdered one witness while the other managed to escape. The cops arrested Charan's associates the next day while they were trying to flee.

The surviving eyewitness agreed to testify in court and Charan attempted to kill him while he was being escorted to the court by the police, but failed.
