What’s more, drivers will also be able to book slots online for their vehicle’s fitness test, and can select their preferred date and time and make online payment for renewal of permit.

“The footfalls to the RTO office has dropped by almost 50 per cent after we adopted paperless policy for learners driving licence test. While earlier, we would have around 500 people coming to the office every day; the number of applicants has come down to around 250.

They don’t have to wait for long in queues for the test and the entire process has become much faster. Looking at the success rate, we are now planning to initiate online appointment booking for renewal of transport vehicle permit as well, which is most likely to start by the end of November,” informed Jitendra Patil, regional transport officer.

Officials at the RTO are looking to work on software that can help them streamline the process. The online system will also provide vehicle owners a list of items that they have to ensure is in place, like reflectors, working head and taillights, pollution under control (PUC) certificate, etc., before they bring their vehicles for the fitness test.

“The online booking for fitness test will help make the process faster and reduce footfall of people coming to the RTO. Before giving the certificate it is important to check the vehicle thoroughly, which is otherwise a time-consuming process,” added Patil.
