Pune: A 29-year-old, working as a chef in Australia, has filed a case of extortion and fraud against his wife and in-laws after the latter cheated him by pretending to be an unmarried fashion designer from the city. According to sources at Dattawadi police station, the woman, Swati More, threatened to kill chef Sunny Dimber and his family members if he did not pay her Rs 25 lakh.
Cops have found that More and her family are serial offenders and have conned several men in the past, using the same modus operandi. Apparently, Swati, who married Sunny in 2015, had married another person in 2004 and had not procured divorce from him. Cops have filed a case against Swati, her father, Raosaheb More, mother Jayshree, her brother, Deepak, and uncle Sarjerao Mohite under relevant sections of the IPC for cheating, extortion, concealment of former marriage and criminal intimidation.
Sunny's mother's Shailja, 56, a resident of Laxminagar, said, "We found Swati on a matrimonial site. She claimed to be a fashion designer. But when Sunny asked her for her education certificates to apply for visa proceedings, those turned out to be fake. Also, we found that she had studied till Std VII. Last year, Sunny's friend found objectionable pictures of Swati with another man on a social networking site and we realised she was still married to that man."
Shailja said soon after the threats started pouring in. "When refused to pay R25 lakh, she filed a domestic violence case, under Section 498A of the IPC, against us. But, when we moved the HC, we found she had filed a similar case against a Shirur-based man in 2004."
Police Sub-Inspector AG Dhafal said, "It seems the woman is misusing the 498A law for financial benefits. Swati and her family members are absconding, but we have launched a search operation."
