In a tragic accident on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, five people were killed on Thursday evening after their car crashed into the beam of a flyover The incident took place at the Deval-Malavli flyover at about 5.15 pm, when the driver of the car – an Innova – lost control of the steering, and rammed the car into the flyover’s beam. The impact of the accident was such, that all five people present in the car, including two men and three women, were killed immediately.

The victims’ faces were badly disfigured, making their identification tough for the police. Using identity cards found on their persons, the Lonavala rural police have identified the deceased as Jyoti Hinge (25), Anita Kamble (27), Aarti Modak (28), Suman Dey (32) and Suraj Shingde (35). The victims’ relatives were called in from Panvel and were scheduled to arrive late in the night.
Annirudh Gide, police sub inspector of Lonavla rural police station, said, “They were on their way to Pune when the incident took place. The car was plying on the expressway at a high speed due to which the driver lost control of the wheel and rammed into the beam of the flyover on the extreme left lane of the e-way.”
He added, “The impact of the accident was such that all five people were stuck inside the car, and it took more than 20 minutes to get them out of the car. We rushed them to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival.”
