Pune: 2,522 students get bicycles from PMC

The long wait endured by students of PMC schools for their promised bicycles is finally over, simultaneous with the partial relaxation of the model code of conduct in the city. In a two day drive that was flagged off yesterday, 2,522 students between stds VII and X will be receiving brand new bicycles from the civic body. The bicycles could be given out only because the model code of conduct has been partially relaxed.

“Results were declared in civic schools today. As the model code in the state has been also relaxed by the central government, we have started distributing cycles from today,” said Srinivas Kandul, superintending Engineer of PMC (central storeroom).

Since last month, the bicycles had been kept at three civic schools in the city. PMC manages 25 high schools in the city, and has a total of 11,090 students on catalogue.

PMC education officials said that they had done a scrutiny of the 2,522 students who would be receiving the bicycles in the first phase. According to them, 1311 boys and 1211 girls are receiving cycles.

To promote the culture of riding bicycling among students, the PMC had announced a scheme to distribute bicycles to students studying between Stds  VII to X. The qualifying factor was that the student had to reside at least two kilometres away from the school.
