Powerful quake jolts Pakistan, tremors felt in north India

A strong earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, on Sunday struck the Hindukush mountain region in Afghanistan, ripples of which were felt in Pakistan and several parts of north India, including Delhi

New Delhi: A strong earthquake, measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale, on Sunday struck the Hindukush mountain region in Afghanistan, ripples of which were felt in Pakistan and several parts of north India, including New Delhi.


The duration of the quake was around 10-15 seconds. The epicentre of the quake was in the border region of Afghanistan and Tajikistan in the Hindu Kush mountains having a depth of 236 kilometres.


The tremor was felt in Khyber-Pakhtuknkhwa and Punjab province as well as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan regions. 


So far there is no report of any loss to property and human life.

According to J L Gautam, Operations Head of National Centre for Seismology, "The earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale at a depth of 190 km hit Hindukush mountain region at 3:58 PM."

In north India, tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Chandigarh and Haryana, besides Delhi.

Delhi Metro services were also halted for few minutes.
