Last year, more than 100 armed pirates robbed 402.35 metric tonnes of white peas from a tanker stationed 12 nautical miles from the Mumbai coast in the Arabian sea. The incident took place on October 27, 2011. Around 12 wooden boats filled with pirates captured the Orient 2 barge and robbed white peas worth Rs 94.47 lakh.

According to Sanjay Kundalia, who owns a series of barges, this was not the first incident and a similar episode occurred when dacoits made away with 1,809 metric tonne of pulses worth Rs 3.5 crore in the month of July in 2011 from one of his barges. u00a0
